December 29, 2006, Newsletter Issue #47: The Disadvantages of Coil Mattresses

Tip of the Week

A coil mattress is not only uncomfortable for some, but the coils can break. The springs can uncoil and “poke” out through the top of the mattress. However, another major reason to prefer foam mattresses to coil mattresses is the “valleys” created by a coil mattress. Compared to regular coil mattresses, another reason for buying a foam mattress is due to the ability for regular coil mattresses to lose their shape.

Coil mattresses have a history of sagging in the middle, creating a “valley” in which the occupants of the bed will roll into the center of the bed. This will not happen with a foam mattress, which conforms to the individual's body structure.
