Determining Mattress Density

Another great tip for selecting foam mattresses is to opt for foam mattresses with a certain density level. The density of foam is measured by taking a 12” x 12” x 12” cube of foam and measuring its weight. Using the formula for density, the density of foam can be determined.

The density measured will also be one of the indicators of how firm a mattress will be. Foam mattresses with a density in the range of 5.3 – 5.9 lb are the best densities to select. This density range has been decided on based on the average weight of a male and female, and the ability of foam mattresses to withstand this weight. Anyone preferring a softer mattress should consider a density of 5.3, whereas a density of 5.9 is purchased when a harder mattress is preferred.
